A Web of Scraps!

Welp, another pile of scraps has found a home! I actually can’t believe I saved some of these, and yet, I am so happy I did!

I scrounged around my scrap piles, pulling out all of my off-sized white-ish strips. These strips are all odd lengths and odd widths, with most being under 2” wide. I also found a whole pile of 1” black strips…. Why did I save those?! I probably just couldn’t bring myself to throw them out!

I decided to create random strip sets, alternating between white and black strips. The only requirement was that they needed to be at least 5½” wide once sewn. I made a few that came out too big, and I just trimmed them down to 5½”.

Each of the strip sets had three black strips and five white strips. I cut 5½” triangles from each strip set.
Using the triangle lines on the 60-degree diamond ruler, align the 5½” line along the bottom edge of the strip set and the flat tip along the top edge. Cut on both sides of the ruler, then rotate the ruler 180 degrees to make the next cut.

I continued making strip sets and cutting triangles until I had (18) 5½” triangles, enough for three spider webs (6 triangles each).

I cut one 6” trapezoid for each triangle from the remaining 1” black strips. I sewed these to each triangle up the left side, and pressed that seam open.

Here you see six of those triangle units laid out into a hexagon web. Sew these triangles together into two halves, pressing the seam between the first two triangles open before adding the third triangle. Finally, join the two halves by sewing one seam up the middle and pressing that seam open.
I laid out all three spider webs point to point and cut (4) 6” triangles to fill in the areas between the webs.

I sewed these fill-in triangles to each web to create bigger diamond units that can easily be joined together without Y seams.

Then it was quilting time! It would be fun to do spider web quilting. But my typical straight lines won out again, and I got it done quickly 🙂

A black binding and a few sparkly spiders crawling around, and just like that, there’s a new decor piece in my kitchen!
Happy Sunday, everyone.
