  • Free quilt binding tutorial

How to Bind Double Machine Binding. This binding is sewn to the back of the quilt, then turned to the front and top-stitched. Step 1 Cut desired fabric into 2-1/2" strips. Lay one strip right side up and one right side down making a 45 degree corner. Pin as shown. Step 2 Sew from one outside corner to the next. Repeat with all the strips. Step 3 Continue to add strips. Trim seam allowances to 1/4" and press seams open. Step 4 Fold strip in half lengthwise and press. Step 5 Place the binding on long edge of the quilt and pin 6 to 8 inches from end of the binding. Step 6 Sew 1/4" seam allowance starting at the pin leaving the 6 to 8 tail unattached. Step 7 Continue sewing the length of the quilt stopping 1/4 inch from the corner. Pivot towards outside corner and sew diagonally off the edge. Remove from the sewing machine. Step 8 Fold the strip perpendicular to the corner. Hold finger in place. Step 9 Now fold binding down along bottom edge. Sew the binding across the bottom and repeat the corner process until you've done all four sides and corners. Step 10 After attaching binding to all four sides and corners, leave an 8 inch opening. Click Here for another way to join the ends. Step 11 Fold the right end back at a 45 degree angle. Step 12 Lay left strip into the folded 45 degree right side fold. Step 13 Carefully hold the strips together open and pin them at a 45 degree angle. Step 14 Sew from one corner to the other corner, as seen photo. Step 15 Trim off excess and press strip flat. Step 16 Sew last 8 inch open section closed with 1/4 inch seam. Anchor 1 Step 17 Flip quilt over and roll binding to the front. Set needle position to the left and stitch as close to the edge as you can. Step 18 Corner fold: Pin corner fold in place. Stitch into corner, drop needle, then pivot to the next side turning quilt around needle, and continue stitching. Step 19 Repeat process until all four sides and corners are done. Voila, you are done! Alternate Step 1 Picking up at step 10 with the 8” left open. Lay a measuring tape down along the right tail of the binding. Anchor 2 Alternate Step 2 Now lay the left tail of the binding over the right and cut it off at the 2.5” line. If your binding is cut 2.25” wide you’ll want that as your overlap, the same goes for wider bindings, whatever width you cut the strips that will be what you want as an overlap when you go to join the ends. Alternate Step 3 Carefully pick up the two ends and with right sides together pin them at a 45 degree angle. Alternate Step 4 Sew the strips together from outside corner to outside corner just like in step 2 . Alternate Step 5 Trim the seam down to ¼” and press flat. Now you can proceed picking up at step 16 .
