You stitched what to your table runner?!

Another week, another crazy quilting idea :) I needed a nice all-purpose table runner to brighten up my kitchen table. I have plenty of seasonal and holiday runners, but nothing for everyday use between holidays.

A couple of years ago, I made a fall runner by appliquéing silk leaves onto a fall plaid fabric. I thought I could adapt that idea for a spring/summer theme!
I went to the craft store to see what I could find for greenery. I got these large Monstera leaves and a cute green and white striped home decor fabric. You could use regular fabric, but the added texture and weight of the home decor fabric gave it a nice feel.

Peel the plastic stem off the back of each leaf and press them out flat with your iron. I used a pressing cloth and steam, so I didn’t take the finish off the leaves.

I cut the striped fabric into a 15” x 44” rectangle and quilted it with ¼” straight lines. I added a layer of backing and batting (I like 100% low-loft polyester for this sort of thing because it won’t shrink when washed).

Then, I layered on the Monstera leaves in a random pattern, even letting some of them hang over the edges to be cut off eventually.

I switched to green thread and free-motion outlined stitched the leaves in place. I followed the original detail lines in the leaves to add to the texture and shading.

Here you can see it from the back, and you can see all the quilting detail.

I added a 2¼” binding from the same striped fabric, and just look at how simple and nice this came out! This was a quick project, and now I have a fresh look in my kitchen 🙂
Happy Sunday, everyone!
