Scraps Were Used!

Updated: Jun 29

You know the routine :) I tinker with scraps… and see what happens! I haven’t made a new cover for my bench pillow since Valentine's Day, so this week I thought I would do something fresh for summer.

I had a few scraps left over from this pretty red, white, and blue floral collection. I paired them with a light robin egg blue background and a red check for the flower centers… all scraps!

I cut 1½” wide strips of each fabric. Then, using the 60-degree TINY ruler, I cut 2½” trapezoids from those strips.

This is what you will need for one flower block: twelve red trapezoids, two checked trapezoids, and twenty-six blue background trapezoids. I used the flat tip of the ruler to trim the outside tips off flat on each piece.

Lay out all of the trapezoids as shown and sew them together into horizontal rows. Press each seam open.

Sew the rows to each other and press those seams open.

Use a long, straight ruler to trim the right and left edges off flat. This makes a flower block that comes out about 8½” wide x 9” tall.

I made three blocks like this with different fabrics in each block.

Since this was going to be a bench pillow, I decided to frame these blocks together with a scrap of striped fabric I had. I trimmed down the right and left edges to make each flower block, 7½” x 9”, fit the pillow better. Then, I added the 1¼” frame between and around them.

I needed to make the whole thing 13½” tall, so I added a 2” blue strip to the top and bottom edges.

Then I was off to quilt it! I made a backing panel to match and added a zipper (see my zipper tutorial here).

And here it is! A fresh new pillow for my bench 🙂

Happy Sunday, everyone, and Happy Father's Day too!
