  • Bias Binding Tutorial

Bias Binding Most quilts can be finished using 1 yard cut into 2.5" strips to make a bias binding. Step 1 Open yard of fabric. Press out center crease and fold like a napkin bringing one corner to the opposite corner. There will be residual material unless you are using a perfect square. Step 2 Take the other corner and fold down to the opposite corner to complete the napkin. A finger is placed between the edges of the double fold. Step 3 Using a ruler, trim off the double layer open fold as seen in the previous picture with my finger between the folds, which will result in a layer of four pieces of fabric. Step 4 Rotate fabric 180 degrees. Cut strips from left to right in 2.5" strips. Step 5 Sew the 45 degree edge of strips together, using dog ears as a guide, into one long snake. Press seams open. Step 6 Fold in half lengthwise and press. Step 7 The strip is easily manipulated into a gentle curve due to the bias cut. Step 8 R oll it up and you'll be ready to bias bind your next quilt.

  • Double Machine Binding With Piping | Krista Moser

Double Machine Binding With Piping STEP 1. I prepare my basic binding and sew it to the back of the quilt all the way around, joining the ends together as I would before rolling it to the front to topstitch it down. You can find my tutorial on that process HERE . STEP 2. I cut enough piping strips ¾” wide to go around the whole quilt, plus about 10”. Sew them all together end to end on the diagonal just as you would binding strips. Cut the excess away from the seams and press open. Now, fold it in half and press down the length of the strip. It should measure ⅜” (kinda small). STEP 3. Starting close to an end (about 2” from the corner), place the piping piece just under the edge of the binding as it is wrapped around to the top of the quilt, being careful to leave enough of the piping to go clear to the end plus an inch or so. Put a couple pins through the binding to hold it in place as you get ready to sew. Set your needle position to the left and carefully take a couple of stitches to secure the layers in place. You will be topstitching to catch the binding and the piping tucked between it and the top of the quilt. I work my way down the quilt a couple inches at a time, tucking the piping in just as I’m coming to it. I’m not a big fan of pinning everything first because inevitably I end up having to adjust and readjust as I go. STEP 4. About 2” from the end, I stop and clip off the excess piping strip. I lay it along the next edge and tuck and pin the corner to hold it secure while stitching it down. I work my way around each corner and each edge until back at the first corner, and then I close it all up.

  • How to Piece Diamonds | Krista Moser

How to Piece Diamonds STEP 1. Use ¼” quilters tape (it’s like masking tape for marking rulers and fabric, it doesn’t leave a residue). STEP 2. Wrap a piece over the end of your thumb, this will act as a quick guide to pin placement. STEP 3. Make stacks of the diamond sets. STEP 4. Take the diamond pieces and lay them right side together. Stagger the seam by about ¼” (as best as you can eyeball it). STEP 5. Use your taped thumb guide to measure from the cut edge down to the seam ¼”. STEP 6. Put a pin right on the seam and ¼” from the cut edge. STEP 7. Poke the pin through the seam. STEP 8. Line the pin up with the seam on the other piece. Make sure the two cut edges line up and the pin goes through both seams. STEP 9. This will result in a perfect match! If you are doing diamonds or angled seams with sashings involved, continue the process as follows: STEP 10. Sew the sashing to one of the diamond blocks and press the seam open. Draw a line with a disappearing fabric marker and ruler to carry on the “seam line” across the sashing strip. STEP 11. Take the next diamond block and line it up with the first block and sashing. STEP 12. Fold it down over the sashing staggering the seam line and the marked line ¼” like before. STEP 13. Using your taped thumb guide, measure from the cut edge to the seam and place your pin. STEP 14. Now push the pin through the seam and into the marked line, making sure the cut edges match up. STEP 15. Sew this seam with a ¼” seam allowance and press open. Voila, Perfect match!

  • Mitered Borders | Krista Moser

Mitered Borders STEP 1. Cut your border strips. Lay them right sides together at a 45 degree angle. Using your ruler, draw a line from corner to corner as shown. This improves accuracy, especially for wide borders. STEP 2. Pin in place and sew on the line. STEP 3. Using the rotary cutter and ruler, cut the excess off ¼” from the seam and press open. Repeat this process adding strips until you have border lengths that extend beyond the quilt on both sides. They should be at least as wide as the cut size of the border. For example: If your quilt is 60” across and your border is 5” then your border length should be at least 70” giving you a full 5” hangover on each side. Remember to recalculate for the side borders once the top and bottom borders are on, or you may end up shorting yourself. STEP 4. Fold the border in half to find center and mark it with a pin. Do the same to find the center on the quilt. Pin the two together at this point. STEP 5. Find a flat place to lay the quilt out. Continue pinning the border to the quilt working your way out from the center in each direction. Do not stretch the quilt in any way during pinning or you may end up with “lettuce leaf” borders that ripple. STEP 6. Put a pin ¼” from each end of the quilt. Start stitching at the pin leaving that ¼” unsewn. Stop stitching at the pin on the other end, leaving the last ¼” unsewn. STEP 7. Sew the border on the quilt with a ¼” seam allowance. It may help to sew with the border side up and the pieced quilt facing the feed dogs. This way, they can do all the work of “easing in” any excess fabric. STEP 8. Repeat this process until all four borders are on the quilt. Start the next border right at the first border seam or ¼” from the end of the quilt. STEP 9. Be sure not to stitch over the first border while sewing the side borders on. STEP 10. Press the borders out flat and smooth out the corners. STEP 11. Take the top border and turn it under to match the side border. This should be a perfect 45 degree angle; the corner should be square at this step. STEP 12. Press with a steam iron to get a nice crisp flat crease. STEP 13. Gently fold over the edge of the quilt just enough to get pins into where this crease was pressed; you want that angle to stay right where it is. STEP 14. Sew the miter together right down the middle of that crease, backstitching when you start and stop. STEP 15. Cut the excess off ¼” beyond the seam. STEP 16. Press this seam open. STEP 17. Turn the quilt over and press the seam from the front making sure there are no hidden puckers or loose stitches. STEP 18. Repeat for all four corners

  • Free quilt binding tutorial

How to Bind Double Machine Binding. This binding is sewn to the back of the quilt, then turned to the front and top-stitched. Step 1 Cut desired fabric into 2-1/2" strips. Lay one strip right side up and one right side down making a 45 degree corner. Pin as shown. Step 2 Sew from one outside corner to the next. Repeat with all the strips. Step 3 Continue to add strips. Trim seam allowances to 1/4" and press seams open. Step 4 Fold strip in half lengthwise and press. Step 5 Place the binding on long edge of the quilt and pin 6 to 8 inches from end of the binding. Step 6 Sew 1/4" seam allowance starting at the pin leaving the 6 to 8 tail unattached. Step 7 Continue sewing the length of the quilt stopping 1/4 inch from the corner. Pivot towards outside corner and sew diagonally off the edge. Remove from the sewing machine. Step 8 Fold the strip perpendicular to the corner. Hold finger in place. Step 9 Now fold binding down along bottom edge. Sew the binding across the bottom and repeat the corner process until you've done all four sides and corners. Step 10 After attaching binding to all four sides and corners, leave an 8 inch opening. Click Here for another way to join the ends. Step 11 Fold the right end back at a 45 degree angle. Step 12 Lay left strip into the folded 45 degree right side fold. Step 13 Carefully hold the strips together open and pin them at a 45 degree angle. Step 14 Sew from one corner to the other corner, as seen photo. Step 15 Trim off excess and press strip flat. Step 16 Sew last 8 inch open section closed with 1/4 inch seam. Anchor 1 Step 17 Flip quilt over and roll binding to the front. Set needle position to the left and stitch as close to the edge as you can. Step 18 Corner fold: Pin corner fold in place. Stitch into corner, drop needle, then pivot to the next side turning quilt around needle, and continue stitching. Step 19 Repeat process until all four sides and corners are done. Voila, you are done! Alternate Step 1 Picking up at step 10 with the 8” left open. Lay a measuring tape down along the right tail of the binding. Anchor 2 Alternate Step 2 Now lay the left tail of the binding over the right and cut it off at the 2.5” line. If your binding is cut 2.25” wide you’ll want that as your overlap, the same goes for wider bindings, whatever width you cut the strips that will be what you want as an overlap when you go to join the ends. Alternate Step 3 Carefully pick up the two ends and with right sides together pin them at a 45 degree angle. Alternate Step 4 Sew the strips together from outside corner to outside corner just like in step 2 . Alternate Step 5 Trim the seam down to ¼” and press flat. Now you can proceed picking up at step 16 .
