How to Piece Diamonds
STEP 1.
Use ¼” quilters tape (it’s like masking tape for marking rulers and fabric, it doesn’t leave a residue).
STEP 2.
Wrap a piece over the end of your thumb, this will act as a quick guide to pin placement.
STEP 3.
Make stacks of the diamond sets.
STEP 4.
Take the diamond pieces and lay them right side together. Stagger the seam by about ¼” (as best as you can eyeball it).
STEP 5.
Use your taped thumb guide to measure from the cut edge down to the seam ¼”.
STEP 6.
Put a pin right on the seam and ¼” from the cut edge.
STEP 7.
Poke the pin through the seam.
STEP 8.
Line the pin up with the seam on the other piece. Make sure the two cut edges line up and the pin goes through both seams.
STEP 9.
This will result in a perfect match!
If you are doing diamonds or angled seams with sashings involved, continue the process as follows:
STEP 10.
Sew the sashing to one of the diamond blocks and press the seam open. Draw a line with a disappearing fabric marker and ruler to carry on the “seam line” across the sashing strip.
STEP 11.
Take the next diamond block and line it up with the first block and sashing.
STEP 12.
Fold it down over the sashing staggering the seam line and the marked line ¼” like before.
STEP 13.
Using your taped thumb guide, measure from the cut edge to the seam and place your pin.
STEP 14.
Now push the pin through the seam and into the marked line, making sure the cut edges match up.
STEP 15.
Sew this seam with a ¼” seam allowance and press open. Voila, Perfect match!
